Set up your catalog taxonomy
You will build a minimal internal taxonomy — a root Medicines category with one child — and map it to the storefront. This takes about five minutes.
Before you start
- You need permission to view and create categories (
categories.viewandcategories.create). - At least one storefront category should exist if you plan to map menus (create them on the Storefront categories tab).
1. Open Categories
Go to Catalog → Classification → Categories (/pims/categories).
Stay on Categories. Note the KPI summary rail — it updates as you add nodes.
2. Add a root category
Follow Add a root category:
- Name: Medicines
- Description: Prescription and OTC medicines
- Active: on
Click Add Category. Medicines appears at the top level.
3. Add a child category
Follow Add a child category:
- Parent: Medicines (use the + action or ⋮ → Add subcategory on that row)
- Name: Tablets & Capsules
- Map to your storefront Medicines menu entry if available
The child appears indented under Medicines. The Storefront column shows mapping badges when linked.
4. Verify storefront mapping
Mapped rows show storefront labels in the Storefront column. Open Map to storefront categories if you need to adjust mappings later.
Optional: bulk import
If you already have a spreadsheet taxonomy, use Import categories from CSV to create up to four levels at once.
What you learned
- Product categories form an internal tree independent of the customer menu.
- Storefront mappings connect that tree to what shoppers see.
- Delete stays safe — the app checks for children and products before allowing removal.
Next steps
- Search categories when the tree grows.
- Product vs storefront taxonomy — why there are two layers.
- Switch to Storefront categories to manage menu slugs, icons, and featured products.
