Automatic group discounts

‹Draft — replace with a real story from our floor.› We run customer groups at our own pharmacies — staff, panel patients, corporate accounts. The old way, a cashier had to remember who got what and key the discount onto every line. On a busy day they forgot, or applied the wrong rate, and we ate the difference. So we made the price follow the customer.

The problem

Most point-of-sale software treats a discount as a manual action: the cashier has to recognise the customer, remember the right rate, open a dialog, and apply it — often line by line. At a queue, that’s where mistakes and leakage happen: the discount is forgotten, applied at the wrong rate, or applied to the wrong customer.

How the Smart Counter solves it

When you attach a customer who belongs to a discounted group, the discount applies to the cart instantly — no dialog, no per-line entry, no remembering the rate. Clear the customer and it’s removed. The price simply follows the customer.

It also stays predictable: only one discount applies at a time, and a group discount is the highest priority — it overrides a coupon or a manual discount, so a cashier can’t accidentally stack them. (Full rule: Discounts, coupons & groups.)

What makes it different

The difference is automatic vs. manual. Competitors expose group pricing as one more thing the cashier has to do correctly under pressure; the Smart Counter makes it a property of the customer record that the screen enforces for you. That’s the kind of detail you only prioritise when you’ve watched your own cashiers lose money to the manual version.

When it doesn’t apply

  • The customer isn’t attached, or their group has no discount → nothing is applied.
  • A group discount is in effect → an entered coupon or manual discount won’t stack on top (it replaces, by priority).

To do it: Add a customer.
